Despite earthquake, ISL Online's remote support uninterrupted in Japan

16th March, 2011. The powerful earthquake and tsunami, which slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, haven't affected ISL Online's performance nor damaged their Japanese servers. Not surprisingly, the use of ISL Online's remote desktop support and web conferencing services dropped by nearly 60% at the time, even though some persistent users returned to their desks minutes after the big quake.

"Perhaps the most intriguing information is that one remote support session was established exactly one second prior to the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake and lasted for almost three hours," reveals ISL Online's CEO, Jure Pompe. "Yet, surprisingly, the first ISL Online session after the initial quake was established only two minutes afterwards and was followed by other sessions one after another almost like on a normal business day. Still, if we compare the number of sessions from 11 March with a normal Friday average as seen from the graph, it is immediately clear that a large chunk of sessions are missing (coloured pink)."

According to Mr Pompe, their web collaboration services worked without any interruptions during and after the earthquake. "ISL Online's Cloud network infrastructure, which is a global network of dedicated servers that hosts ISL Online sessions wordwide, stayed up in the face of disaster. Because of its cloud infrastructure, it is largely independent of potential disturbances which might occur on individual servers," explains Mr Pompe and continues: "In a rare case when a server drops out, either due to the Internet or power supply failure or internal errors, all ISL Online sessions are seamlessly transferred to the next best server. But despite the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and the proceeding devastating tsunami, all Japanese servers worked well and ISL Online services without any interruptions."

This story, like many others, points to the diligent nature of the Japanese people and perseverance which can only be described with this native proverb: "Fall seven times, stand up eight." Today, after the biggest natural disaster of recent times, ISL Online wishes all of Japan a speedy recovery and stand up again soon.
